The Beginning Of The LA Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball were established in 1893. They were originally known as the Brooklyn Atlantics, followed by a number of other names before finally becoming known as the Brooklyn Dodgers, of Brooklyn, NY, in 1938. The Dodgers have had a long, heated rivalry with the San Francisco Giants. Dating back more than 100 years, it is the longest rivalry in baseball history. Both teams originated in the New York City area, with the Giants beginning in Manhattan, and when they both moved to California in 1958, the hatred was easily transplanted with them as Los Angeles and San Francisco have always rivaled in economic, cultural, and political arenas. In 1934, the struggling Dodgers ended the Giants chances for glory. The Giants and the St Louis Cardinals were tied for the pennant at the end of the season, with the last two games for the Giants against the Dodgers. Brooklyn went on to win both games while the Cardinals won both of their games against the Cincinnati Reds, clenching the pennant for the Cardinals.

Brooklyn set milestones for Major League Baseball by playing the first ever televised game on August 26, 1939 against the Cincinnati Reds, and introducing batting helmets in 1941. Major League Baseball did not allow any African American players thru most of the first half of the 20th Century. African Americans instead had their own parallel system of Negro Leagues; however, this kept them from getting to play in the national spotlight. On April 15, 1947 Brooklyn broke the color barrier when Jackie Robinson played his first Major League Baseball game. The inclusion of Robinson effectively ended the Negro Leagues and is considered a key factor in the Civil Rights movement. Robinson won the first ever Rookie of the Year award, which has since been renamed to the Jackie Robinson Award in his honor.

Real estate businessman Walter O Malley gained the majority ownership of the Dodgers in 1950 and sought to find a suitable amount of land to build a new stadium on, since Ebbets Field had grown old and, despite dominating the league, the Dodgers couldnt sell out the stadium any longer, even in the heat of the pennant race. After it became clear he was not going to be able to buy the land he wanted, OMalley began looking elsewhere. After World War II, transcontinental travel became much easier with teams being able to fly rather than the much slower travel method trains. This allowed teams to be spread further apart, even as far west as California. The Giants faced a similar issue with their aging stadium and both teams would move to California. On April 18, 1958 the two teams met for the Dodgers first game as Los Angeles, in front of 78,672 fans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where the Dodgers won 6 5.

The 1959 team ended the season tied with the Milwaukie Braves and wound up winning the tie breaking playoff. The Dodgers went on to play, and beat, the Go Go Whitesox for the championship, further solidifying the bond between LA and the Dodgers. The city of Los Angeles and the Dodgers organization have since been in great harmony.
